What is an Employee Assistance Program?

April 3, 2023

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides employees and their families with access to professional counsellors. These counsellors can help with mental health, financial issues, stress related to eldercare, legal support and more. An EAP gives employees a safe space and connects them with support and guidance with life’s challenges.

How does EAP work?

Employees and their family members can call the EAP number 24/7, 365 days a year, to be connected with the program. There will be a brief intake to assess their needs and then they will be directed to the best services in their area. There is also an online account that can be set up that has a wealth of information to read on how to improve your wellbeing, whether that is personal, professional or even financially. The services are completely confidential.

How many in-person counselling sessions are covered?

An EAP offers short-term solutions and support. The number of sessions with a counsellor covered through an EAP will depend on the person’s needs. It is important to note that an EAP provides help in more than one area. For example, a person may seek legal support regarding family law when dealing with a divorce or separation and is referred to a lawyer. That same person may then want to seek additional counselling to deal with the stress of that situation.

Services through an EAP offer support with work and personal issues, dependency issues, health coaching and legal queries to name a few.
